Managing aggressive dogs should begin with awareness. You should know that dogs are not dumb animals and that they usually have a reason for being aggressive. It is possible for example that a dog may only be exhibiting his natural tendency to be dominant. Your dog may feel that it is the alpha creature in the house and will react negatively to any attempts that seem to undermine its superiority. Dog obedience training is the best way to stop aggressive dog behavior. However, there are several approaches to dog training though. Find the most suitable one based on what your dog needs most. It is important for example to learn vital verbal commands that dogs interpret and react to.

Step 3: Show affection and understanding for your dog.

Don’t be frustrated if your dog continues to manifest aggressive behavior. It’s quite possible that you’ve already enrolled him in obedience training or you may have even trained them yourself but this does not guarantee that your dog will change overnight or over one week. Training a dog and correcting a behavior takes time and patient.

Dogs have different personalities. Keep in mind that different approaches may work differently with different dogs. Be observant of your dog’s behavior while training and identify the strategies that work from those that don’t.

Training a dog to stop aggressive dog behavior cannot be stressed too highly enough. All you need is to find the right technique and to have the right amount of patience and perseverance to go through it.

Which Dog Breed Is Right For Your Family? http://keob.com/which-dog-breed-is-right-for-your-family/ http://keob.com/which-dog-breed-is-right-for-your-family/#comments Thu, 20 Nov 2008 10:22:47 +0000 Lee Dobbins http://keob.com/which-dog-breed-is-right-for-your-family/ by Lee Dobbins

When choosing a dog breed it is important to first look at your lifestyle and then at what type of dog breed fits that lifestyle. You need to be able to determine how much time a day you can devote to your dog including puppy training, socializing, classes and other activities. Puppies take up a lot of time that you may not have available.

You also need to determine if you or your family is allergic to any specific type of dog. Some individuals can tolerate specific types of breeds while others may have problems with any type of dog. Or perhaps you are the lucky one with no animal allergies.

Buying a purebred dog will be a large cost. Additionally there are other costs that most pet owners don’t think about until they have their new dog. There are many costs that accumulate once you have your dog, like shots, food, accessories, crates, inoculations, obedience school etc. Try and have an idea of the expected shocks so you don’t get stuck. You can’t simply give back a dog if all of a sudden you can’t afford it.

Most dogs are very social and will like being around people and spending time with you and your family. You need to make sure you have room for your dog. Apartments can be very difficult for dogs. If you don’t spend a lot of time at home but want a dog then you should look at getting a more solitary breed.

The size of your dog is extremely important. Most breeders can give you a pretty good estimate at how large your dog will be once it is full size. This is based on its breed and parents. You can pick a dog that is small, medium, large or very large (giant) breeds. Make sure you have room and can handle the size of your desired dog.

You can find general dog breed information in books and also on the internet. If you are looking to have some specific questions answered then you may want to speak with a local dog breeder, veterinarian, kennel club or groomer. It is important to find a reliable breeder to obtain a healthy dog and any of these avenues can provide you with the correct information.

If the breed of your dog doesn’t matter then you may want to rescue a puppy form your local animal shelter. There are always animals that need a home and you can get a puppy for free.

Your Siberian Husky Loves To Work http://keob.com/your-siberian-husky-loves-to-work/ http://keob.com/your-siberian-husky-loves-to-work/#comments Wed, 19 Nov 2008 15:50:36 +0000 Andrew Preston http://keob.com/your-siberian-husky-loves-to-work/ by Andrew Preston

All types of Siberian Husky dogs have one thing in common, which is that they trace their ancestry back to the sled dogs of the Northern Hemisphere. These early sled dogs were also called “Eskimo dogs”. Other descendants of the ancient Eskimo dogs include the Siberian Husky, Samoyed and Alaskan Malamute. All these modern sled dogs originated in several Northern Hemisphere countries like Siberia, Canada, Greenland and Labrador. The Siberian Husky gets its name from the Siberian region and from an Inuit tribe, called “huskies” by early Caucasian traders.

White Siberian Huskies were valued for their ability to blend into the snow, helping to thwart predators. Proving themselves time and again as one of man’s best friends, the Siberian Husky made it possible for man to extend his reach across lands that would otherwise have been unreachable. Admiral Robert Peary used Siberian Huskies as part of his expeditions in search of the North Pole. In 1925, Siberian Huskies heroically delivered diphtheria serum over six hundred miles snow to Nome, Alaska.

In fact, the most famous dog sled race in the world, the Iditarod, is a re-creation of the historical delivery of the diphtheria serum.

The white Siberian Husky is a category of the Siberian Husky breed that is based on a particular mix of the dogs’ genes. There are several different types of white Siberian Husky breed. An Isabella White Siberian Husky is one type.

The Isabella is usually monochromatic, with jet-black points, although the standard of the breed specifies that the points can also be liver or flesh toned. These dogs have a white undercoat with distinct buff tones above the hock and elbow, on the ears, on the saddle and a streak of buff in the center of the tail.

The modern white Siberian Husky remains a “working breed”, though the dogs are rarely used for dog sled racing today, except in purebred competitions. A type of Siberian Husky mix relative, the Alaskan Husky, has the number one spot for fastest dog sled racer, so demand for Siberian Huskies for dog sled racing is minimal.

The white Siberian Husky is rarely used for dog sled racing today, because the Alaskan Husky, a faster dog, is the dog of choice for competitive dog sled racing. The dogs still pull loads through the snow though. Many winter sports enthusiasts who own Siberian Huskies as pets enjoy recreational mushing with their dogs. Other contemporary chores all types of Siberian Husky dogs enjoy include skijoring, a winter sport where Siberian Huskies working in groups of one to three pull skiers. Dogs also race off the snow through the forests of the United Kingdom.

The entertainment industry makes extensive use of Siberian Huskies. A team of Huskies starred in Disney films Snow Dogs and Iron Will. Stephane Dion, leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, owns a white Siberian Husky named Kyoto, for the Kyoto Protocol. Siberian Huskies are also popular mascots of universities like Jonathan represents the University of Connecticut; King represents Northeastern University; and Blizzard T. Husky represents Michigan Technological University.

Before starting a dog walking business, you need to familiarize yourself with the different dog breeds, and their care and maintenance needs. All of this requires meticulous planning and attention to detail, or your business may do poorly and fail. Formulate a solid plan and be methodical as you construct your business.

In planning your business strategy, first decide who your potential customers are. You will have to do some research to figure out where your customers are located. The ideal customers for a dog walking business are elderly people, handicapped individuals, those who go on regular vacations, and people with long work hours. Once you get an idea of your prospective customers, you also need to determine who your competition is and what they charge. You can do a survey online to get this kind of information.

You have to outline the start up costs in order to get your business underway. Your expenses will mainly be in the form of business cards, groomers, dog supplies, pamphlets, and other miscellaneous items. Always provide for contingencies so that you do not bust your budget when things fail to go as planned. You will also need to procure a license to start and run your business.

The most crucial thing in getting your business going is advertising. Distribute your business cards to vets, stores that specialize in pet supplies, and your friends. Telling your friends and associates might just be one of the most efficient ways of building up your client base. After you have established your business, you might decide that you want to diversify by offering other services to your customers.

Online directories and pet publications are another great way to spread the word about your new business. Many people refer to these publications when choosing dog walkers, so make sure you check them out. You might also be interested in advertising with some pet care organizations. Membership in one or more of these groups will allow you to develop a social network with other dog walkers, and to become more familiar with the latest developments in dog care.

Make a contract for each of your clients that mentions the name of the dog, the rate you will be charging, periods or dates that you will be walking the dog, and the various services you offer. Do not forget to keep a supply of leashes, poop bags, and a first aid kit handy at all times.

Always keep your eyes and ears open to discover new ways and means to enhance your business. Continue diversifying and adding to your client base. This way your dog walking business will turn out to be a roaring success.

Dog Aggression Training Tips http://keob.com/dog-aggression-training-tips/ http://keob.com/dog-aggression-training-tips/#comments Tue, 18 Nov 2008 10:05:35 +0000 Andy Austin http://keob.com/dog-aggression-training-tips/ by Andy Austim

If your dog is acting aggressively towards anyone then this is something that you should not tolerate and be dealt with as soon as the problem becomes apparent. But in order for you to be able to find the right type of dog aggression training for your pet in order to bring the problem under control, one first needs to know what kinds of aggression your dog has.

In this article, we take a look at just what these are. It is important to remember that a dog may not only show just one type of aggression in fact they could show several.

1. Dominant - This kind of aggression occurs in a dog who thinks that they have the status of being the alpha member of the pack and will want to assert themselves more towards others. They will especially assert their dominance if they feel that the interloper is a predator. This kind of aggression more often occurs in male dogs or in particular breeds, and in order for the owner to bring this problem under control they will need to quickly establish themselves as pack leader instead.

2. Fear - A dog who suffers from this kind of aggression will generally find even the slightest noise can trigger an episode. In most cases such dogs will generally only growl, bark, bare their teeth or snap at the thing, which they are afraid or unsure of. However, should a owner choose to ignore the warning signs that their dog is suffering from this form of aggression it could lead to much more serious problems in the future. If left uncontrolled such dogs could end up causing injury to others as they may retaliate to the situation by biting what they feel is a threat to them.

3. Over Protective/Territorial - A dog who suffers from this form of aggressive behavior is actually a danger to anyone who they come into contact with. Along with feeling territorial about the place in which they leave, this if left to continue will also become an issue for dog and owner when they are away from the home as well.

4. Possessive - This can make a real Jekyll and Hyde out of your dog, one minute they can loving and playful the next they are baring their teeth or snapping at you. This will normally occur when you approach something that they consider to be theirs. In many cases, a major trigger for this type of aggression is when you approach them when they are eating. If you want to stop this problem, you need to react as soon as you notice it occurring.

5. Punishment - This kind of aggressive behavior occurs more often in those animals where punishment has been used excessively by their owners. Although initially when being punished the dog may not respond aggressively towards their owner, if over time the punishments become more severe then the chances of the dog responding in such a way is greatly increased.

In this article, we have looked at just a few of the kinds of aggressive behavior that dogs may suffer from. It is only once the owner has identified what kind of behavior it is they can then find the right kind of dog aggression training to use. As you will soon find when you search the internet there is plenty of advice and tips on ways of dealing with an aggressive dog.

50 Gallon Aquarium - Take Time To Consider Before Buying http://keob.com/50-gallon-aquarium-take-time-to-consider-before-buying/ http://keob.com/50-gallon-aquarium-take-time-to-consider-before-buying/#comments Mon, 17 Nov 2008 20:14:03 +0000 Trish Hunter http://keob.com/50-gallon-aquarium-take-time-to-consider-before-buying/ by The Aquarium Lady

50 gallon aquariums are the ideal addition to any home, and are the perfect size if you are interested in keeping fish as a hobby. Owning an aquarium is a very popular hobby with millions of people around the world, and as mentioned, for those first taking this up, then getting a 50 gallon aquarium is the ideal size of tank to start off with.

One thing you need to consider if you are thinking about setting up an aquarium as a hobby is, can you spare the time and resources that keeping fish requires. Although you may think that setting up and then maintaining a 50 gallon aquarium is going to be easy, this is simply not the case.

Buying A 50 Gallon Aquarium - Things To Think Of First

One of the first things that needs to be done before you can actually buy any fish or marine life to put into your 50 gallon aquarium, is spend time creating the ideal environment for them. If you don’t, then you are likely to be faced with problems that they can’t cope with, and you could actually end up killing off everything you put into it.

Have you got enough money for this hobby? It’s all well and good having the money to buy a 50 gallon aquarium, but don’t forget you need to buy other equipment as well that will ensure that the perfect environment is created within the tank for the fish, marine life and coral. So don’t buy one if you can’t actually afford to buy the filtration, heating and air pump systems as well.

Things To Learn And Understand Prior To Buying A 50 Gallon Aquarium

Buying a smaller 20 or 25 gallon aquarium over a 50 gallon aquarium is cheaper, but if you can afford to, it is far better to purchase a larger sized one. Below we offer some reasons why choosing to buy a 50 gallon aquarium when you are starting out setting up an aquarium as a hobby.

1. When trying to keep the temperature and chemical composition right in an aquarium, this is much easier to achieve in a 50 gallon aquarium compared to a 20 gallon one. The right temperature and chemicals in the water can help with the growth of algae and bacteria that are beneficial to the tank’s maintenance, but also to the health and well being of the aquariums’ inhabitants.

2. This size of tank offers you the opportunity to keep a wide range of fish species in it, as long as they are compatible with each other. For a 50 gallon aquarium, one can keep as many as 50 fish in the tank at any one time, and if you intend to add any more to it later on, make sure that you don’t exceed the ratio of 1 x 1 inch of fish to every 1 gallon of water in the tank.

3. Although bacteria can be harmful to the fish in your tank, some of it can be very beneficial as well. Allow some to grow on the sponges, filters, and your 50 gallon aquarium’s sides, as it helps with keeping the water in good condition. If you do, wash the filters in your aquarium to avoid all the beneficial bacteria being removed from them; don’t wash under a running tap, but rather rinse them out in the 50 gallon aquarium instead.

Dog Training Hand Commands Guide http://keob.com/dog-training-hand-commands-guide/ http://keob.com/dog-training-hand-commands-guide/#comments Sun, 16 Nov 2008 15:51:00 +0000 Andy Austin http://keob.com/dog-training-hand-commands-guide/ by Andy Austim

If an owner wishes along with using verbal commands to control their animal, they can also use hand commands as well. When it comes to teaching your dog the various different kinds of dog-training hand commands, you will in the beginning need to use verbal commands also. In this article, we look at just one of the ways in which a dog owner can teach such commands to their dog.

Certainly, teaching your dog hand signals is very simple and most dogs will find them very easy to understand. But in order to get started on training them you will need a few treats, which you can provide to your dog as a reward for getting what, you have asked (signalled) of them right.

It is crucial when you first start training your dog to react to hand commands rather than spoken ones is that you use the two in conjunction with each other. Also, you need to first decide what signal will represent what spoken command that you want your dog to obey. Only after you have made a decision on each hand command can you then start actually training your dog to respond to them.

When you first start your dogs hand command training you will need to say the word and show them very deliberately the hand movement at the same time. This you will need to repeat several times to them before they start to understand what it is that you would like them to do. Immediately you notice that they have reacted as you begin to raise your hand and say the word then this is the time that they should be rewarded.

As you continually repeat the commands and signals you should very slowly you should start to eliminate the verbal commands. However, you should still use the rewards of food and praise for your dog when they respond to your hand signals only. For a while as you begin to slowly eliminate the verbal commands you should when carrying out the training, use them half of the time, and the other half of the time just hand signals.

Then when you start to notice that your dog is reacting purely to your hand commands only then this is the stage when you start to stop giving them food as a reward. However, you should never eliminate the rewards immediately from the training and if you want praise, them slightly for doing as commanded instead of offering them food.

When you are teaching your dog to respond to hand commands rather than verbal ones it is best that you start of with the basics. So therefore, you should spend time teaching them the hand signals relating to sit, stay, come and down before you actually try anything a little more difficult.

Getting the right kind of advice when it comes to you, teaching your dog to respond to hand commands is easy to find. There are lots of books, videos and websites that offer sound advice and information on what are the right dog training hand commands techniques that one should be using.

Goldfish Care For Commons And Fancies. http://keob.com/goldfish-care-for-commons-and-fancies/ http://keob.com/goldfish-care-for-commons-and-fancies/#comments Sat, 15 Nov 2008 14:08:25 +0000 Mike Tazzey http://keob.com/goldfish-care-for-commons-and-fancies/ by Mike Tazzey

Goldfish Care. The aim of this article is to offer general Tips an advice to goldfish hobbyists on care for your goldfish. Hopefully this article will help in understanding your fish needs, to keeping them happy and healthy.

Aquarium Equipment

For your goldfish care you will need these items, but buy these well before you get your goldfish..You may not require all these items depending on your climate. Aquarium and hood with a stand, fluorescent lights, airline tubing with an aquarium filter and air stone, a thermometer, a siphon with buckets for water changes, gravel, freshwater test kits for testing ammonia etc, seeding kit, plus plants and ornaments.

Caring For Goldfish.

One aspect of care is knowing what to give them for food, being omnivorous you will find they will eat almost anything. For beginners I would suggest relying on the pre-packaged goldfish foods from your pet store, which can be floating flake or pellet form, though only for common goldfish and comets. Feeding them twice a day is sufficient, but give them only enough food that they can eat in 2 to 3 minutes, you don’t want uneaten food causing problems to your water quality. .

Fancy

Fancy goldfish care is a lot different in terms of feeding and their requirements in an aquarium, compared to the common type goldfish. Heating is a must, temperatures of between 65 to 75 F are required, and should never fall below 50 F. Keeping common or comet goldfish with fancies will result in you losing your fancies, among various reasons for this is the different feeding habits, continually letting fancies surface feed will lead to buoyancy problems, and death. So Fancies need to be fed sinking pellets or granules. Fancies can grow large, up to 6 inches or more, so keep one fancy per 10 gallons of water in your aquarium as a rule.

Goldfish Care - Mixing Common With Fancy.

Understanding the difficulties that would arise with keeping both common and fancies together in the same tank, you first need to know fully each types requirements. I mentioned above the feeding aspect, but the problem is far greater than that. Both commons and comets are cold water fish, heating for them is not required, their movement is quicker and they are stronger than the fancies, and are unlikely to succumb to buoyancy problems. But they are very likely to attack your fancies and kill or injure them. Fancy’s can not tolerate cold water, or temperature fluctuations, they need heating in the tank, slow in movement, and can not compete with other fish for food. Your goldfish care and health is a must, keep them apart.

Varied Diet.

For the health of your goldfish care must be taken in feeding them food that has been specifically made for them, on occasion you can also give them peas (remove the outer skin), also blanched green leafy vegetables. For fancies pre-soak these well so they sink, and remove any that float on the surface.

Sickness And Disease.

Good health is always a priority in goldfish care, with good house keeping practices your fish should not experience to many problems with disease. The major cause for sickness and disease in aquariums is poor house keeping, things like over crowding, toxics in the aquarium, dirty water, poor filtration, rough handling and stress, along with rapid temperature changes, these ultimately lead to viruses and bacteria, fungi and protozoa. Introducing new fish into your aquarium can also bring disease, so quarantining the new fish for several days will let you see that its ok. if you do experience any problems your local pet store or vet can advise you on what you need to do.

Ammonia And Chlorine.

Chlorine is added to most tap water, and is harmful to your fish, as part of your goldfish care a 20% water change each week is recommended, use an air stone in the tap water for 24 hours to dispel the chlorine, and then ensure the water is the same temperature as the aquarium water. Ensure the Ammonia and nitrite readings are zero, and the nitrate readings should be 10ppm ideally, or even less.
